After landing stateside and being transported to Walter Reed, Jason was admitted to the ICU. A few short hours after arriving at Walter Reed, Jason was back in for surgery. The deployment was cut short due to a military move from Germany to Kansas.
After a month of training in Mississippi, Herrick found himself in Kuwait, then Ramadi and finally Fallujah. Herrick’s unit, the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion , was assigned to convoy soldiers and materials between bases. On its very first mission, the unit fell under mortar attack, leaving five of the platoon dead and 33 wounded. Upon entering a safer area, where each of the convoy vehicles provided reports of what happened, Herrera started to feel disoriented and noticed a loss of sensation in her right arm. It was later found that Herrera had been hit after firing about 10 rounds of ammunition.

Our organization achieves to build better and brighter lives for our injured veterans, their family members and their children well beyond the gifting of a home. As we look ahead, we want all of our veterans to not only survive, but thrive in life. From a delivery standpoint, we hope to achieve our milestone 300th home gift in 2022, and our 400th home gift in 2024. This organization has not provided information regarding the Equity Practices it is presently implementing. In his 20th year of service, Master Sergeant Vera’s base came under attack from a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device driven by suicide bombers. Master Sergeant Vera exposed himself to the blast as he pulled wounded soldiers away from enemy fire. Among the major sponsors in attendance was The Just in Queso Foundation, the non-profit arm of Tijuana Flats. Just in Queso presented a check for over $46,000 to support the effort to convert the house into the Castillo family home.
